Individual Lessons

Vermont Literacy Network's Individual Lessons are designed to provide tailored support for children in pre-kindergarten to third grade. These one-on-one, multisensory lessons go beyond traditional tutoring, offering a personalized intervention that targets specific phonological skills crucial for decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling). Whether your child is building foundational skills or building upon existing ones, our Individual Lessons create a supportive and dynamic environment for all students!

Give your child the supports that they need to be successful; book a FREE Initial Student Evaluation today!

Initial Student Evaluation

Before enrolling in Individual Lessons, all students must complete a FREE Initial Student Evaluation. This evaluation is a benchmark assessment to determine student strengths and growth areas. Data collected from the evaluation will be used to create instructional goals for Individual Lessons.

Throughout this evaluation, students will be assessed on their understanding of the following concepts: phonological awareness, alphabetic principle, identification of irregularly spelled high frequency words, decoding (reading), and encoding (writing).

Family Reports

After the completion of the Initial Student Evaluation, you will receive a family report that provides data on your child's key literacy skills such as phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, identification of irregularly spelled high-frequency words, decoding, and encoding. Each area will include a raw score, percentage correct, proficiency rating, and an explanation of the results to help you understand your child's current abilities. The report will also sets instructional goals and may offer additional comments and resources tailored to support your child's learning. Click the button below to see an example of what your child's family report may look like.

Lessons Cycle of Intervention

Lessons Cycle.png

Individual Lessons are designed to ensure each student receives personalized, effective interventions that address their unique literacy needs. Instructional goals are first determined using the data collected within the Initial Student Evaluation. Skill-targeted, multisensory instruction is then provided using a variety of methods to engage different learning preferences and reinforce the targeted skill. Formative assessments, or "Show What You Knows," are conducted regularly to monitor progress and adjust instructional methods as needed.

Application-based instruction allows students to apply what they've learned in practical contexts. This typically looks like reading targeted skill words within text or reinforcement through writing projects. After a couple of weeks, a summative assessment is administered to evaluate overall mastery of the skill. If a student successfully masters the skill, they may exit the lesson cycle, or if further support is needed, new instructional goals are set to continue their literacy development.

Growth Monitoring &
Family Communication

At Vermont Literacy Network, we prioritize transparent and consistent communication with families to best support our students! We truly believe that      a parent is a child's first teacher

Beginning in July 2024, Vermont Literacy Network will be introducing mandatory monthly conferences with families. These 20-minute, prescheduled meetings will provide an opportunity for conversations about your student's progress, emerging growth areas (if applicable), and achievements! During the conferences, teachers will present and review collected assessment data, discuss instructional strategies, and provide additional resources. This ensures that families are actively involved in their child's education and can provide valuable support at home!

*Please note that conferences may be requested at any time in addition to the soon-to-be-required monthly meeting. We are happy to talk with you about your child and their progress at your request!*
